A new wrinkle has been added to the legal case for the mother of Elijah Vue.
Kathy Pakes, the Director of the State Public Defender’s Assigned Counsel Division, has submitted a letter to the court, stating she plans to object to Katrina Baur’s request for a new lawyer.
Pakes said in the letter that changing lawyers now would be “inefficient and disrupt progress” as the case has been ongoing for over a year and a half.
However, Attorneys Kirk B. Obear and Amanda K. Riek have also written to the court, saying they believe the attorney-client relationship has broken down between Baur and her attorney, Amber Gratz, and offered to take over the case if the request was granted.
While there is a lot of emotion surrounding the case, it is important to note that everyone has a right to defend themselves in court, regardless of the charges against them.
A hearing on the matter has been scheduled for July 13th.
Bauer and her boyfriend, Jesse Vang, are facing charges in connection with Elijah’s death in 2024.
Both are scheduled to begin a two and a half week long trial in April of next year.
