With the warmer weather and summer storms, roofing scams become more common. This spring, BBB Scam Tracker is already receiving reports of shady “free” roof inspections.
The way the scam works is you receive a call or a person shows up at the door claiming to represent a roofing company. The “roofer” offers a free inspection, claiming to be working on a neighbor’s home as well. But if you ask questions about where the business is located or how their services work, you’ll most likely be met with vague answers, or, if you are speaking on the phone, they may simply hang up.
If you do accept their offer to fix your roof, they will take a payment, and either not do any work, or do a little, then leave and you never see them again. The best way to ensure you are hiring a reputable contractor, is to call a local company that others have used as well. If you’ve been the victim of a roofing scam, report it on BBB Scam Tracker immediately.
