With the help of citizens providing their input, the Two Rivers City Council has approved the widening of a section of 24th Street.
City Manager Greg Buckley said the project was originally pitched to widen the entire stretch of roadway from Forrest Avenue to Jefferson Street from 28 feet o 32 feet, but that proposal received some public backlash.
“There were, at the March 15th meeting, a number of residents who were concerned about the widening,” Buckley explained. “Council at that time voted to modify the project to rebuild that current street at a width of 28 feet.” However, other citizens put together a petition, letting the Council know that they actually did want the street widened.”
The Council held an extensive discussion on Monday (April 5th) and came to the decision to approve the project, with a bit of a change.
Buckley said that the Street will be widened from Forrest Avenue to Washington Street, while it will be rebuilt at its current width from Washington to Jefferson Street. Buckely explained that there are some older trees in that section of the roadway, and most of the residents of that area wanted to keep the road at its current width.
Greg called the dialogue held between city officials and residents on 24th Street very important and believes the Council made the correct decision.
