For many, this Easter weekend is a time to see family that you may have not been able to see for the past year and to enjoy each other’s company. While that is a perfectly good way to celebrate the season, Pastor Matt Sauer is reminding everyone about the importance of Holy Week, and the Easter holiday.
While speaking with Seehafer News, Sauer explained that Holy Week begins the Sunday before Easter on a day known as Palm Sunday. Sauer said that day is significant because “That is the day that Jesus finally enters the City of Jerusalem known that by the end of the week he will be dead.” Sauer said there is a bit of a misconception about the fabled procession on a donkey that many people do not know. “Despite that we often want to portray it like there were thousands of people there to welcome there, there were only about a handful of people,” he explained. “These are common people. These are workers. They are breaking branches off of trees and waving them in a symbolic way.”
Then on that Friday, which this year landed on April 2nd, is the day that Jesus was killed on the cross, known as Good Friday. While that name may seem counterintuitive, Sauer said “We call it good because the death of Jesus brings about the salvation of the world.” And finally, on Easter Sunday, Jesus rose from the dead, which is what Sauer will be celebrating starting at 6:00 AM at the Blue Rail Beach along Lake Michigan.
For the second year in a row, that service will be aired live on 107.9 FM WOMT, and at WOMTRadio.com. While it was a necessity last year, this year it simply allows more people to enjoy the service, and celebrate the true meaning of the holiday with others. If you do decide to go in person, you are welcome to be outside of your car. Sauer just asks that you remain socially distant.
