Emergency responders rescued eight people from a burning building in Brown Deer Thursday morning (April 1st).
North Shore Fire Rescue says the first call came in at about 9:30 a-m.
Firefighters found people on the second and third floors leaning out of windows, yelling for help. That led to the fire being upgraded to a second alarm.
Eight people were evaluated for injuries and exposure to smoke, but only one required hospital treatment.
Several elderly residents had called 9-1-1 saying they were trapped.
Battalion Chief Dan Tyk says a number of those callers had to be pulled to safety out of upper-story windows on the backside of the building.
The cause of the fire is being investigated. Authorities believe it started in a first-floor unit.
