If you’re caught with one ounce of marijuana in your possession in Milwaukee the fine can run anywhere from $50 to $500. Two members of the Common Council want to eliminate those fines.
Nataline Dismukes and Marina Dimitrijevic say now is the time to get rid of the fines. Madison has done it. Dimitrijevic says now isn’t the time to be filling local jail cells with people who were holding an ounce, or less.
An ACLU study finds Black people are more three times more likely to receive pot possession citations than white people; however, not as many people are cited these days. About 2300 citations were issued a decade ago –last year the number was down to 400.
