With a 3:00 p-m Wednesday deadline looming, the Green Bay Packers barely got under the N-F-L’s $182 million salary cap.
The Packers made it by converting a big chunk of outside linebacker Za’Darius Smith’s salary into a signing bonus, which saved more than $7 million.
Green Bay figures to continue talking with Smith about an extension because he has performed so well since he arrived.
If the team is going to be active in signing free agents, more salary restructuring is on the way.
It’s possible part of quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ $37-million salary will be turned into a signing bonus – or, All-Pro wide receiver Davante Adams could be signed to a long-term deal to lessen the cap hit.
