
MONDAY
– Senator Glen Grothman is calling on the CDC and National Institute of Health to further consider the single-dose COVID-19 vaccination strategy. This comes after studies show that a single dose of the Pfizer vaccine can be up to 85% effective in protecting against the virus three to four weeks after inoculation. The Pfizer vaccine was developed as a two-dose shot and reported an efficacy rate of 95 percent.
– The City of Manitowoc has applied for funding through the Safe Drinking Water Loan. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources said the application is intended to address deficiencies in Manitowoc’s public drinking water system, primarily involving the replacement of lead service lines citywide. The state program has determined the lead service line replacement will not result in significant adverse environmental effects and no further review is necessary before proceeding with funding.
– One person’s loss, is another’s gain. While the closing of Shopko was a huge blow to many people, Country Visions Cooperative was able to take advantage of a bad situation, and have now preparing to move into the former Shopko building in Brillion. CEO Steve Zutz called the move “exciting… for Country Visions as we design our operation to meet the needs of our customer long into the future.”
– Three youth hockey teams from Manitowoc competed at State tournaments this weekend, and each had a vastly different experience. The Manitowoc Breakers Squirt C team earned a second-place finish, the Squirt B team were Consolation Runners-up, and the Bantam team lost all three of their games.
TUESDAY
– Five suspects are now in police custody in connection to a burglary and drug ring that spanned three eastern Wisconsin Counties. The suspects, 42-year-old Eric P. Vanduyse, 45-year-old Heather A. Barnes, 48-year-old Tonja J. Maples, and 39-year-old Steven R. Vendehei, would reportedly burglarize storage units, buildings, and construction sites and then trade the stolen property to 36-year-old Chauncy F. White for marijuana and methamphetamine.
-MPU customers were not heavily affected by a vehicle striking a utility pole on the north side of the city on Tuesday. The vehicle reportedly lost control, jumped the sidewalk, and struck the pole in the 1600 block of North 8th Street. The incident remains under investigation.
– There are three blood donation opportunities coming up in Manitowoc County. The Manitowoc-Two Rivers YMCA is hosting a drive on Wednesday, March 17th, as is Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church on April 5th, and the Farm Wisconsin Discovery Center on April 9th.
– The Capitol Civic Centre has announced its Centennial Celebration, a 100-day journey through the Capitol Theatre’s 100-year history. Historic detail, bios from volunteers, tidbits about past performances, arts partners’ news, and more will be shared on the Capitol’s Facebook page, as well as on CCCShows.org.
WEDNESDAY
– Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a bit of an odd call on Monday night (March 8th). At around 10:30 PM, Deputies arrived on the scene of a crash near the intersection of Highway 32 and County Road A to find that the driver of the SUV had struck a cow. The driver, a Sheboygan Falls man, was reportedly injured in the incident, and required treatment at a local hospital. The bovine did not survive the incident.
– A man accused of sexually assaulting a young girl is due in court on Monday (March 15th). The victim, a 13-year-old Sheboygan girl, told police that she was sleeping in her Pershing Avenue home last June when Wayne Roeker came home after a night of drinking. He reportedly entered her room, climbed on top of her, and proceeded to sexually assault her. Roeker’s court appearance on Monday is scheduled to be the start of his jury trial, and he faces up to 60 years in prison if convicted.
– A Green Bay man who allegedly crashed a truck into a utility pole on the east side of Green Bay back ion January has pleaded not guilty. 74-year-old Wallace Bowers remains in the Brown County Jail after his request to reduce his $30,000 cash bond was denied. This case is the 18th time Bowers has been charged with OWI dating back to 1988.

THURSDAY
– A woman who is looking to represent Manitowoc’s 1st Aldermanic District, was due in court Friday in a theft case from last year. Theresa Schmitt was in front of Judge Robert Dewane at 10:00 AM for a plea hearing on two charges of retail theft, one felony and one misdemeanor. Click here for more details.
Candidate Running for Manitowoc City Council Due in Court Tomorrow
– Former Brown County Clerk Sandy Juno spoke out on Wednesday (March 10th) while in front of the Assembly Committee on Campaigns and Elections, claiming Green Bay Mayor Eric Genrich used what she termed “democratic operatives” during the 2020 elections. The Mayor claims that they have not violated any laws, and that these accusations are “without merit.”
-A man who allegedly shot and killed another man at the Fox River Mall in Late January before going on the run has pleaded not guilty. 17-year-old Dezman Ellis entered the pleas on both charges of 1st Degree Intentional Homicide and 1st Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety Wednesday (March 10th) while in Outagamie County Court.

FRIDAY
– A candidate on the Spring Election Ballot in Manitowoc’s 1st Aldermanic District, has dropped out of the race. Theresa Schmitt was charged with two counts of retail theft last year, but claims that the charges will be dropped. The plea hearing was scheduled for Friday morning.
– A 30-year-old Manitowoc man and a 19-year-old Cleveland woman are now in police custody after they were found in possession of a large amount of drugs. Police officers were dispatched to an unnamed motel on the east side of Two Rivers at around 7:00 PM Thursday and found over 120 grams of Methamphetamine, over 27 grams of heroin, and about one and a half grams of cocaine, along with several items of drug paraphernalia.
– The Crossing of Manitowoc County and the Lakeshore Community Action Program have announced that the organizations have joined forces to create the Connections Count program. Connections Count Program at Lakeshore CAP is a free and voluntary program. Once a referral is made to the program, the client will be assigned a Community Connector who will connect them to resources.
– A Green Bay man that served his country during World War II is about to turn 100 years old, and the assisted living facility he in is living is trying to get 100 veterans to send him birthday cards to mark the occasion.
