The District Attorney’s Office has reportedly reached a plea agreement with a Fond du Lac couple that will let them avoid jail time for illegally processing sturgeon eggs into caviar.
Mary and Victor Schneider were charged with misdemeanor egg bartering last month.
Department of Natural Resources wardens were told that sturgeon anglers would bring in the eggs for caviar processing and the Schneiders would keep half of the caviar as payment.
They were reeled in as part of a wide-ranging investigation into sturgeon egg bartering around Lake Winnebago that wrapped up last year.
Their charges will be dismissed if they stop producing caviar, don’t commit any crimes, and check-in with court officials every month for a year.
