The University of Wisconsin men’s hockey team has won the recruiting battle for a standout Canadian player: Owen Mehlenbacher from Fort Erie, Ontario.
The six-foot-two, 185-pound forward announced his oral commitment to the Badgers Monday. He singled out U-W coach Tony Granato as a key to his decision.
Mehlenbacher had offers from Cornell, Harvard, Miami, Boston University, Penn State and several other schools.
With in-person recruiting shut down for the last 11 months, the 17-year-old athlete says he went on virtual tours and scouted the campuses using online street-level mapping.
Mehlenbacher would be the seventh player to become part of Wisconsin’s recruiting class of 2022.
