It may be bitterly cold outside, but that hasn’t swayed spearfishers who want to bag a prized sturgeon on the Lake Winnebago system.
Thousands of anglers took to the ice on Saturday morning to help kick off the 2021 sturgeon spearing season on the system of lakes.
Many participants said that the lake was very clear, making the fishing much easier. In fact, one man said he could see about 15 feet down.
Those who are able to catch the monster-sized fish do have to register them at a variety of drive-thru DNR weigh stations.
437 sturgeon were caught on the first day alone.
