State Senator Andre Jacque of De Pere has teamed up with three other legislators to introduce the Apprenticeship Tuition Tax Deduction Bill.
The bill, co-sponsored by Representatives Shannon Zimmerman and Calvin Callahan along with Senator Patrick Testin, creates an income and franchise tax deduction for tuition expenses paid by a taxpayer for an individual to participate in an apprenticeship program that is approved by the Department of Workforce Development.
Currently, tuition for universities and technical colleges qualifies as tax-deductible, but apprenticeship program tuition is not.
The group said in a joint release that they will be “re-introducing legislation to level the playing field by creating a tax deduction for individuals that are paying tuition to participate in apprenticeship programs.”
