The second time it came up members of the Milwaukee Common Council approved using a $10-million federal grant to hire 30 police officers.
The city won’t have to provide matching funds.
The Common Council had rejected the idea previously.
Alderman Russell Stamper questions how those salaries will be funded in three years when the COPS grant runs out.
Another who opposed the idea, Alderwoman Marina Dimitrijevic, pointed out that Milwaukee has spent $35-million on police misconduct cases and there is still no long-term plan to fill the position of police chief permanently. She says the city’s “system is broken.”
Despite that, accessing the grant money passed on a nine-to-six vote.
