The Manitowoc Police Department has released their end-of-year numbers, and they look much like one might have expected.
Officers were called for service a total of 28,630 times this past year, which is down significantly from the previous year, which had a total of 32,112 calls. The number of criminal charges was also down, but not by as much as the reduction in calls might indicate. There were only 41 fewer adult criminal charges (1,943 in 2020, and 1,988 in 2019), and 18 fewer juvenile criminal charges (218 in 2020, and 194 in 2019).
As one may have suspected, the Safer at Home Order led to fewer cars on the streets, which resulted in a significant decline in the number of traffic citations. 2,309 were issued in 2020, which is significantly down from the 3,444 issued the previous year.
The number of traffic crashes was also down. 1,032 incidents occurred last year, compared to 1,268 in 2019. As far as parking violations go, the number of street sweeping tickets that were issued rose from 2,312 in 2019, up to 2,477 in 2020. Since there haven’t been any major snowfalls in 2020, no snow emergency tickets were issued, and only 3 winter parking ban tickets were issued this winter so far. Those numbers were much higher in 2019, as 129 snow emergency tickets were issued, and 479 winter parking ban tickets were written.
