Marquette built a big first-half lead on the way to a 79-69 win over Providence Tuesday night.
Koby McEwen scored 17 points while leading the Golden Eagles with eight rebounds and five assists. Freshman Dawson Garcia’s 20 points led all scorers.
Marquette followed the hot-shooting of Garcia on the way to a 34-18 lead at one point. The Friars cut the margin to 38-29 at halftime, and a 13-5 run by Providence narrowed the margin to 66-64 with three-and-a-half minutes left but the Friars never managed to wrestle the lead away.
Marquette’s record improved to 7-and-6, including 3-and-4 in Big East Conference games. The Eagles play at St. John’s Saturday afternoon.
