The Madison Police and Fire Commission will offer the city’s police chief position to Doctor Shon Barnes.
The P-F-C’s 3-2 vote came after about an hour of public comments on the finalists and 90 minutes of deliberation Friday afternoon.
Barnes is currently the director of training and profession development for the Civilian Office of Police Accountability in Chicago.
He began his career as a patrol officer with the Greensboro, North Carolina Police Department in 2000 and moved up to captain.
Barnes also served as deputy chief of the Salisbury Police Department in North Carolina from 2017 until earlier this year.
The P-F-C will now issue a conditional offer of employment to Barnes.
