The man known affectionally as ‘Mr. Baseball” on the Lakeshore has died.
According to his family, Jim Fuhs entered eternal life peacefully Monday at the age of 83. A 1954 graduate of Oshkosh High School, Jim was part of their American Legion Baseball teams in the mid 1950’s that won three consecutive State and National Region Nine Championships. He was a four-year letter winner on the University of Wisconsin Baseball team and graduated from Wisconsin’s School of Pharmacy in 1958.
After a one year internship in Madison and a six-month stint of active duty in the U.S. Army, Fuhs and his first wife Myrna, who passed on in 2001, moved to Manitowoc in 1960 joining the staff at Buerstatte Drugs. He became a partner of the business in 1962 and changed the name to Manitowoc Pharmacies which it’s known to this day.
He retired in 2003 and was recognized in 2008 by the Pharmacists Society for outstanding lifetime professional and community service. Jim was a charter member of the Manitowoc YMCA and was recognized with four service awards and was also involved with numerous other community organizations. He co-developed the Manitowoc American Legion Baseball team serving as Head Coach for more than a decade, plus coached and ran numerous winter baseball programs held throughout the community and led fundraising efforts as a member of the Legion’s Board of Directors until his death.
The Lakeshore’s ‘Mr. Baseball” was enshrined into The Lakeshore All Sports Hall of Fame in 2002. Jim is survived by his wife Jean, five children, eleven grandchildren, plus a large extended family, friends, colleagues, and customers.
A private family-only service will be held on December 27th at 12:30 p.m. at the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home and streamed on their Facebook page.
