A 20-year-old Milwaukee is the latest to face federal charges for last year’s violence in the city’s Sherman Park neighborhood. A grand jury has handed down arson and rioting charges against Toronse Carter, who’s accused of burning down a B-P gas station in mid August of 2016. A second defendant, Stephen Ruffin, has pleaded not guilty to similar federal charges and he’s awaiting a trial. The gas station was among several businesses torched during two nights of violence spurred by the shooting death of Sylville Smith by former Milwaukee police officer Dominique Heaggan Brown, who was later fired. Four police officers and two teenagers were wounded in shootings connected with the riots — and the total damage was estimated at almost six-million dollars which included damage to six law enforcement vehicles.
