
While thousands of out-of-work Wisconsin residents have had to wait weeks, and even months for their unemployment benefits, the state is saying others got benefits they weren’t owed.
The Department of Workforce Development has identified almost 8,000 possibly fraudulent unemployment claims.
Investigators say nearly $6 million in erroneous payments may have been made between mid-May and November 13th. That’s a little over one percent of the $4.3 billion in payments made by the state.
The D-W-D says its safeguards have prevented another 53-million in possible fraudulent overpayment by those trying to ripoff the system.
