The first reported area casualty of the deer hunting season occurred over the weekend in Door County.
65-year-old West Bend resident, Steven Hoogester was hunting on Door County’s Washington Island at around 5:00 PM on Sunday when he accidentally shot himself. Reports indicate the accidental discharge occurred as he was exiting a ground blind.
Hoogester died at the scene.
Reports indicate that Hoogester has served as an Alderman in West Bend for the last 7 years and was in law enforcement for 34 years before retiring. The investigation by the DNR and Brown County Medical Examiner’s Office is still ongoing, with an autopsy report still pending.
