A group of local citizens has-a-vision to honor a couple who’ve been dedicated to teaching generations of dancers.
Terri Fote is a spokesperson for the group that begins fundraising today for a fountain to be built in downtown Manitowoc in honor of Jean & Sandy Wolfmeyer. She explained that “When Sandy passed away earlier this year we wanted to support Jean and thought we needed to do something like this sooner rather than later.”
Fote explains that Paula Feest came up with the idea and the two of them, along with Sandra Murzyn, Julie Nolden and Chris Akgulian approached the city with their plan.
The fountain along with a ballerina sculpture is going to be placed at the southeast corner of N. 8th and Maritime Drive, where the city is re-doing the intersection next spring, so, they’re under a bit of a tight timeline. Terri said they hope to “put the base of the fountain when the city is ready, while the bronze sculpture should be ready in about a year so, we’ll have a two-phase project. We’re selling pavers to go around the fountain with dancers’ names on it.
SeehaferNews.com asked Terri about their fundraising goal. She said they “need to raise $175,000 to make this work. We’re hoping to get a grant, but intend to ask for donations for this lasting tribute to two people that have given their entire life to the community and the Arts.”
The committee received city council approval for the project Monday night and they’re hopeful of finishing the fountain and sculpture either by the end of 2021, or early spring of 2022.
