The UW-Madison Police Department is investigating the theft of a rare tree from the UW-Arboretum.
Officers say the 25-foot Pillar Swiss Mountain pine tree was cut down and stolen sometime last week. The tree was planted in 1988 about 30 yards off Arboretum Drive. Another tree – a compact white fir planted in 1981 – had a 12-foot section of its top cut off. Police say the crook left the cut section behind. The estimated cost of the damage and stolen trees is $13,000 dollars. Investigators are asking the public for help finding the suspect.
