The Manitowoc Committee of the Whole has voted to send a case of Alderperson Bailey’s residency question to the Wisconsin Attorney General’s office for further review and possible recommendations.
On a vote of 6 to 3 with one abstention, the Committee moved forward on Monday night to elevate this investigation.
City Attorney Kathleen McDaniel explained what the Wisconsin Attorney General’s office would likely be doing in this case. “My understanding from previous instances is that the Attorney General’s Office will go through and conduct their own review,” she said. “I’m sure they would review the information we already have, but they may choose to send out their own investigators to do additional further interviews or investigation.”
It was also noted that the Wisconsin Attorney General’s office could take no action on this matter effectively referring it back to the Manitowoc Committee of the Whole.
This case started when a resident of Manitowoc file a complaint questioning the legal residency of Alderperson Bailey. furthermore, claiming that he no longer lives in within his district.
No timetable has been set for the response from the Wisconsin Attorney General.
A point made during the Monday meeting is that Alderperson Bailey is up for reelection this April and it’s not known if the matter would be settled by the election date.
