Wisconsin senior quarterback Jack Coan will have surgery for a foot injury suffered at a weekend practice.
The reports indicate the Badgers’ starter will miss extended time with the opening game of the 2020 season is just three weeks off.
Candidates to start in Coan’s place include redshirt freshman Graham Mertz, sophomore Chase Wolf, and junior Danny Vanden Boom.
The Badgers were leaning on Coan’s steady presence to help an offense that is short on experience at the skill positions.
Although they still haven’t played a game, Wisconsin moved up to number 14 in the most recent Coaches’ Poll and 16 in the A-P Poll.
