When the Milwaukee Brewers play at Cleveland tonight (Friday), their former cleanup hitter won’t be in the lineup.
Justin Smoak was designated for assignment Thursday and to take his place, the Brewers have acquired first baseman-designated hitter Daniel Vogelbach from Toronto.
Smoak had just one hit in his last 21 at-bats when Milwaukee turned him loose. He was hitting .186 with five homers, but Vogelbach is hitting just .088 and will be joining his third team this year.
It’s possible the move will open up more at-bats for infielder Jedd Gyorko who has five home runs and an O-P-S of .955 in limited playing time.
The first pitch at Progressive Field will be thrown at 6:10 p-m, in a game that will be aired on 107.9 FM WOMT, and at WOMTRdio.com.
