A 64-year-old Madison tax preparer will spend a year and a day in federal prison for filing tax returns containing false information for her clients.
Yvonne Spencer pleaded guilty Wednesday. An IRS investigation in 2018 determined that Spencer had filed the fraudulent returns. The study of nearly 80 tax returns she filed showed the IRS had paid more than $290,000 in unearned refunds. Spencer kept 48 thousand dollars and also charged some of the taxpayers for the work.
She admitted claiming business and educational expenses on behalf of taxpayers who didn’t own a business and weren’t attending school.
