The CN Peninsula, a nearly 21-acre parcel of land west of the 10th Street Bridge surrounded on three sides by the Manitowoc River, is now known as the “River Point District.”
Mayor Justin Nickels says the Council has approved what he termed “substantial funding” for engineering studies and Environmental work. “If you drive past you will see dirt being unloaded so we can start to flatten the property,” the Mayor told SeehaferNews.com. “We have phase one, engineering, pretty much done. The roads, the utilities, the storm water, that is all pretty much ready to rock and roll.”
Nickels says the city wanted the new name to present a unique and distinct feel, so he sent an email to all city employees to send in their best ideas. He gave the incentive of giving an additional day of vacation to whomever came up with the best idea, but as Nickels explained, “It kind of turned against me because there were five or six employees that came up with pretty much the same thing with River Point.”
The city purchased the land for $800,000 in May of last year.
The Mayor adds citizens should see “significant progress” of work on the property by the end of the year.
Meanwhile, talks are ongoing with two potential developers that could be finalized as early as 2021.
