“We just need some great, positive news and that’s what I’m excited to say today.” Those words from Amy Fricke-Weigel, Friends of the Manitowoc Family Aquatic Center Board President prior to the ground breaking ceremony Friday morning at Citizen Park for Phase-3 of the project.
The $2.2-million addition, when completed next Spring, will feature a warming pool, splash pad and shelter for private events.
Mayor Justin Nickels thanked Fricke-Weigel for her leadership and added this. “You have done a lot Amy and it’s showing here today,” the Mayor stated. “I can’t wait for phase 3 to be completed and for the dream from 17 years ago to be a final reality.”
The Friends Board President said it’s hard to believe planning for the aquatic center began 17 years ago. “The Aquatic Center Project has always symbolized a wonderful partnership between the citizens of Manitowoc, and the City of Manitowoc,” Fricke-Weigel said. “The beauty of this project…is that we have one underlying message. We have a very big love for this community.”
Steve Carncross, Director of Preconstruction for Neuman Pools of Beaver Dam said the addition will “enhance the guest experience” and will “provide different elements for the small kids with the spray pads, hot tub warming pool…and having a separate adult and teen area.”
The Manitowoc Family Aquatic Center opened in 2010 and construction on the new addition will start in several weeks, with completion expected by May of next year.
Although the Aquatic Center remains closed for the 2020 season, the family miniature golf course is open to the public.
