Two local law enforcement agencies have clarified their positions on enforcing the statewide mask mandate issued by Governor Tony Evers.
Manitowoc County Sheriff Dan Hartwig issued a statement saying they will continue to focus on investigating crimes and protecting the public, as opposed to investigating or responding to complaints about those without face coverings. He said his staff has sworn an oath to protect the constitution and citizens’ rights, and there is a difference between public safety and public health.
Two Rivers Police Chief Brian Kohlmeier said his department has an obligation to enforce executive or emergency orders and will do so reasonably. He said they will not randomly conduct spot checks or stop people solely because they are not wearing a face covering. They will respond to and investigate complaints, particularly those where there is a disturbance as a result of non-compliance.
