What the coronavirus pandemic is doing to the athletics budget at the University of Wisconsin is enough to make Barry Alvarez sick.
The U-W director of athletics says the program is facing a “great financial challenge” no matter what the fall season looks like.
U-W has already lost an estimated $12 million in revenue, and Alvarez says that could balloon to $100 million in losses before the fiscal year is over.
Since the department budget totals $140 million, Alvarez says the risk is very real.
That message was in an open letter to Badger fans and the community.
So far, U-W athletics has avoided eliminating sports and cutting jobs.
