Emergency responders in western Wisconsin are blaming a mechanical malfunction for a damaging fire at the Burnett Dairy Cooperative.
The first calls about a structure fire were received at about 10:30 p-m Monday and fire crews were on the scene for more than 12 hours.
Twenty people were working inside the plant when the fire started, but no injuries were reported. The presence of tanks of ammonia added to the danger.
Operators of the plant say they will rebuild, but the fire is a major setback for the about 200 farmers who rely on the co-op to make a living.
C-E-O Dave Gaiser says he’s already heard from other cheese-makers who are offering their help.
