Collaboration between nearly all units of local government in Manitowoc County will allow for taxpayers the opportunity to defer the second portion of their tax bill.
County Executive Bob Ziegelbauer explained that “If your property tax payment is current, you can defer the final payment…until October 1st.”
Ziegelbauer tells SeehaferNews.com that amount is usually about 50% of the property tax bill.
The state legislature passed Act 185 as a response to the COVID 19 Pandemic giving all 72 counties the option to defer the final property tax payment due date from July 31st to October first.
The County Board passed an enabling resolution in May which then required local municipalities to pass a similar resolution by July 31st which all did-with the exception of the Town of Rockland.
“We will give up a little bit of interest on taxes,” Ziegelbauer explained. “The local municipalities won’t give up anything, because we collect the final payment at the County Offices anyway.”
Ziegelbauer estimates a $100,000 loss on tax interest plus costs of reprogramming the collection program but emphasizes the County’s financial position is strong and there’s no cost to the municipality.
