Milwaukee County says it has new evidence that a woman lied when she claimed that a guard at the County Jail sexually assaulted her. The county has asked for a new trial, after a federal jury awarded the woman six-point-seven million dollars in damages in June. The woman’s lawyers have asked for an additional 700-thousand dollars in legal fees and court costs. And according to the Journal Sentinel, the county responded by saying that another inmate — Ivan Boyd — quoted the woman as saying she wanted to sue the county to get damages for violating her civil rights. Boyd and the woman spent time in jail together, and the Journal Sentinel says he chose guard Xavier Thicklen and encouraged him to give snacks to the woman because she was pregnant with Boyd’s child.
