A suburban Milwaukee man is due in court Tuesday for allegedly lying about serving in the military. Forty-seven-year-old John Hemphill of West Allis is charged with three misdemeanor counts of breaking Wisconsin’s two-year-old “Stolen Valor” law. W-I-T-I T-V says Hemphill allegedly received military discounts at various places, plus a one-thousand dollar life insurance policy from the American Legion — even though prosecutors say he was never in the military. The T-V report says Hemphill’s sister told his wife he never served, even though he claimed to be a Marine and had a prosthetic leg with a Marine decal on it. W-I-T-I says Hemphill is the second to be charged with falsely claiming to be a veteran — and if convicted, he would be the first.
