Manitowoc city officials are reminding residents to be responsible in their use of herbicide and fertilizer on their lawns. Dan Koski, director of public infrastructure, has put out a release saying the city has recently gotten reports of fertilizer on sidewalks and streets.
He said that chemicals and weed killers are not needed for a healthy lawn, and are one of the main reasons for the green algae that has become such a problem in lakes and streams. He recommended a soil test so you know if your lawn needs more nutrients and mulching to keep the lawn healthy so that it can compete with weeds for light, nutrients and water.
Koski says fertilizing should be done in the fall, and any fertilizer that falls in the street or sidewalk should be swept up, or it will end up in the lake.
