Manitowoc Mayor Justin Nickels has issued a veto of a city council resolution concerning employee time off. He released a letter this morning to the council and president Eric Sitkiewicz detailing his reasons for the veto.
The resolution allows city employees to access up to five days of their extended leave bank without requiring use of personal time off first. The resolution was adopted by the council on June 15th by a vote of 7-2. The council has the power to override the veto, but it would require a two thirds majority vote.
Nickels in his letter said the veto is for a plethora of reasons, but the primary goal is to encourage a more in-depth conversation over employee time off benefits. The mayor says the only thing the resolution does is give all employees anl extra five days off in reaction to the COVID-19 scare.
He feels that the city’s policies are already extremely generous in that regard.
