Protesters in Milwaukee are calling for a ten-percent cut to the police department’s budget. That would amount to about 30 million dollars. Activists Tatiana Washington and Bria Smith have offered that idea as a solution. Milwaukee Police Chief Alfonso Morales says his available funding has already been reduced by about ten-million dollars this year. Morales says any more cuts would limit the ability of his officers to do their jobs.
At the state capitol protesters are sending a clear message for Wisconsin lawmakers. The words “Defund the Police” were painted in huge yellow letters on Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard Monday night. That street leads to the State Capitol building. Protesters were in the streets of Madison for a tenth straight night. There was no permission given to paint the message on that street, though no charges have been announced.
