Green Bay will be under a curfew effective at 9 p.m. tonight. Mayor Eric Genrich said the curfew will be enacted and enforced until it ends at 6 a.m. Wednesday morning. Any illegal activity committed will result in appropriate action to include arrests-fines and detention. Genrich took this action after gunshots and looting were reported just before 1:30 Monday morning at a Marathon Gas Station at the corner of Walnut Street and Monroe Avenue following two peaceful days of protests over the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis at the hand of Police Officer Derek Chauvin on Memorial Day.
Police Chief Andrew Smith said looters turned on police and started throwing items at officers. One officer was reportedly hit by a brick and multiple squad cars were damaged. The curfew encompasses the entire city of Green Bay within its limits and will be imposed on all citizens regardless of age.
All residents should stay home after 9 p.m. and won’t be pulled over unless working or are otherwise engaged in lawful activity. All “peaceful protests” should conclude by 9 p.m. and may begin after 6 a.m. and police action will be directed towards people who are gathering as a mass and/or are engaged in illegal conduct.
Chauvin has been charged with third-degree murder and second- degree manslaughter and charges could be upgraded. Three officers in the vicinity have also been fired and also could face charges.
