Shoreline Hometown Credit Union is continuing to live by its motto, “Hometown Values, Hometown Rewards”. We recently reported that the Manitowoc based Credit Union recently surpassed $30,000 in gift certificates given out through their Hometown Credit Card Program.
We spoke with Shoreline’s Hometown Business Development Director Kyle Bryntesen, who explained that “It’s a credit card rewards program, where we offer our members double rewards for shopping at local Hometown participating businesses.” He called the program a “win/win” because it doesn’t cost the business anything, and drives those who are participating into shopping locally, which in his words “in this time is as important as any.”
For those who are unaware of how a rewards program works, Kyle explained it’s like getting cash back, but without the cash. “For every dollar you spend on your Hometown Rewards Credit Card, you get a point,” he explained. “Once you have 2500 points, you get a gift certificate to a local business for $25.” And again, if you shop at a local business, the points double. He also emphasized the importance of supporting local businesses in this time of uncertainty, calling it “Hugely important”. He spoke about the struggles small business owners are going through and “those decisions they have to make. Whether to lay people off or to close their doors completely. The money they are receiving because of this program just helps to keep those doors open, or reassures their opening once everything clears up.”
