A lot of people have been flooding grocery stores, and places like Walmart in order to stock up on essential items just in case they get placed under a two-week quarantine.
Some businesses have taken this hysteria, and have attempted to make even more money off of it by price gouging.
Price gouging is the tactic used by some outlets where they hike up prices of items that are in heavy demand such as toilet paper, milk, or bread in this case.
The basic laws of economics state that price is influenced by demand, however under state law, during a crisis, retailers and wholesalers and those who provide services are “generally prohibited” from raising prices more than 15% when compared to the original price.
If you believe that a company is price gouging, you are encouraged to report it to the DATCP by calling 1-800-422-7128, by email at DATCPHotline@wisonsin.org, or at DATCP.wi.gov.
