Local Government can seem a little odd to some people. With titles like Mayor, City Manager, and City Administrator all being used, what do they all actually mean?
We spoke with Kiel City Administrator Jamie Aulik, who said the fact that Manitowoc County has cities that use different forms of government is actually quite interesting. He said, “We have three cities, with three very different forms of government.” He explained that in Manitowoc there is an elected Mayor who serves as the chief elected and administrative official, while in Two Rivers they utilize a City Manager form of Government. That is different, as their chief administrative officer is selected by the City Council, but they still have virtually the same power as a mayor. Then in Kiel, Aulik serves as the City Administrator, but they also have a part time Mayor.
As for how that works, Aulik explained, “The Mayor is the chief elected official, while I run the day to day show.” Aulik went on to explain that their Mayor actually only works part time, while he does the majority of the administrative work.
Aulik has worn several hats in Manitowoc County, including serving as the County Clerk, and as the Emergency Management Director.
