Most people have an idea about what yoga is, and how it helps people, but the Manitowoc Public Library is preparing to host a very different kind of yoga.
On Thursday, March 12th Kate Casey will be running Cats on Mats in the Balkansky Community Room in the library. This event is exactly like it sounds, yoga with cats. This is the second time Casey has run this event in conjunction with the Lakeshore Humane Society. She said that last time they did this, they had roughly 12 cats from the Lakeshore Humane Society join them while they held their yoga practice. She said “It was really fun to see them and investigate a new space…it’s always interesting to see how they react. With curiosity or fear or excitement. It brings a lot of playfulness to our yoga practice.”
Casey has been teaching yoga for several years now, getting her start in 2016 and has earned her 500-hour certification. During her certification, Casey explained that she learned about “yoga, it’s history, how to teach it safely, and how to integrate all these ancient philosophies into our current and modern-day lives.” She calls herself a very well-rounded yogi. “Even though we have these old traditions, I bring them forwards to meet you where you are.”One of the ways she does that is through the Cats on Mats program.
Registration is now open through the Manitowoc Public Library website. Those planning to attend are asked to bring their own yoga mat, and a willingness to interact with the felines.
