Villanova blew several good-sized leads, but finally held on to edge the Marquette Golden Eagles Wednesday night 72-71.
The Wildcats led by 15 in the first half and scored the first nine points of the second half – and needed all of that to end a three-game losing streak.
Markus Howard scored 24 points for Marquette and his 3-pointer as the game ended made him the Big East’s all-time leading scorer in league games. Howard is leading the country in scoring with an average of 27-point-four points-a-game.
The loss snapped Marquette’s (17-7, 7-5) three-game winning streak.
The Golden Eagles are idle until next Tuesday when another ranked opponent, Creighton, visits the Fiserv Forum.
