The Manitowoc County Board voted earlier this week to sell 93-and-a-half acres of land to the City of Manitowoc. The property in the Town of Newton is just west of I-43, south of Viebahn Street and along Hecker Road.
Mayor Justin Nickels tells Seehafer News the sale price was just under $860,000. “Long term, this is where the city is growing. You look back at the Expo grounds for example, back when they built that out there, that was on the way outskirts of the city. Not many people thought the city would grow out that way and it did.”
Nickels explains when the land is developed, it’ll likely be a mix of retail, commercial and industrial development.
“We see this as a piece of property, that for the long term growth of the community is very vital. Especially since we are seeing growth on the interstate.” The Mayor added, “we’re thrilled the county was willing to sell it to us.” The utilities are right there at the city limits and Nickels envisions they would annex the property once they get this land. The farmland was almost sold to a local farmer in December 2018.
