A local semi-pro football coach and union steward has announced his candidacy for State Assembly in 2020.
Marcos Alfaro of Two Rivers made the formal announcement Saturday night during a gathering at Wagner’s Country Restaurant in Francis Creek. Alfaro is running as a Democrat in the 2nd Assembly District, which is now represented by Republican Shae Sortwell.
SeehaferNews.com spoke with Alfaro about his decision to seek public office, and he said the idea was brought up to him by “several people that thought it was something I would be good at.”
Alfaro said his major focus will be on education. “I want to work with children. I want to work with our education system. Get our kids ready,” he said. “If we all come together in this district and improve our education system for our kids, I think that would be the right way to go.”
Alfaro is a production worker at Wisconsin Aluminum Foundry in Manitowoc and Vice-President of Local 125 of the United Steelworkers Union. He believes that this experience will help him negotiate with other lawmakers in the Assembly.
When asked why he was running for state office as a Democrat, Alfaro points out he was a migrant seasonal worker growing up. He cited Democratic laws as the reason for his existence in our community. He said, “They pushed to help the underprivileged, the underserved.“
The filing deadline for the office is June 1st with the general election set for November 3rd, 2020 and a possible primary runoff on August 11th.
