Bail is set at $2,500 recognizance bond for a 43-year-old man after his vehicle had apparently crashed into a snowbank near the lakefront late Tuesday night. John Santarelli faces charges of threatening a Law Officer, discharging bodily fluids on a public safety worker, resisting an officer and Disorderly Conduct.
A Manitowoc Police Officer noticed a stopped car in the Marina parking lot with flames coming from the rear of the unit just before midnight. Santarelli initially appeared to be under the influence as he was found bent over with his forehead on the steering wheel and when officers tried to make contact, he became belligerent and attempted to start his car and put it into reverse to leave the scene. A taser was deployed to be able to gain control of Santarelli as he tried to swing at and kick police officers along with threatening EMS personnel. Once restrained and transported to Holy Family Memorial, his violent behavior continued toward hospital staff. Conditions of bail are that Santarelli not drive a motor vehicle without a valid driver’s license and maintain absolute sobriety.
His initial appearance is scheduled for December 2nd at 1:30.
