The Sheboygan Fire Department responded to a fire Sunday night at an apartment complex on Eisner Court. The call came in shortly before 8:30 p.m., and when they arrived, crews found a mattress ablaze outside the residence. The occupants of the building were all alerted to the blaze thanks to their working smoke alarms and were able to get the mattress outside. The fire was determined to have been started by an unnamed child, who was playing with smoking materials. There were no injuries reported, and the fire caused an estimated $1,000 in damage, likely thanks to the quick thinking of the occupants. Acting Battalion Chief Nicholas Noster used this fire as a reminder of the importance of working smoke detectors and their ability to quickly alert occupants of a fire. Smoke detector batteries should be changed twice a year and tested once a month.
