A manufacturing plant on Manitowoc’s Southside was a big winner this week at the World Dairy Expo in Madison. Cedar Crest Ice Cream submitted 6 entries in the Dairy Expo championships and came out with 3 winners. Ken Kohlwey is company president, and he said that they placed first with their Rainbow Sherbet, and got second in the Peanut Butter and French Vanilla categories, just missing out on the top spot for both. The win was a big accomplishment, as PB&J is a new flavor for them in 2019.
Kohlwey said that he is “elated” that his company did so well. “I am very happy anytime we can win there because it’s an honor to do so. There are so many entries, and it really puts you at the top of the class as far as ice cream manufacturers.” In fact, there were 15-to-20 different classifications for ice cream & sherbet.
Kohlwey said the Company, headquartered in Cedarburg, churns out well over 100-flavors of their product at its’ local facility. “We try and change them up every year…We’re just fortunate once and a while when we hit on some big winners.”
Plant Operations Manager, Mike Tessmann, accepted the awards for Cedar Crest Tuesday evening, but Kohlwey was also in attendance to accept congratulations from many of those in the industry. Cedar Crest on South 10th Street, near Dewey, is well-known for its’ famed Cow Bernice and an ice cream parlor on-site.
