All this rain is causing some concern in Two Rivers. City Manager Greg Buckley told SeehaferNews.com “We have some low lying areas where we have some street flooding…Our public works crews are constantly having to clean the stormwater outfalls that open into Lake Michigan because the big lake keeps pushing them full of sand…We are at the tipping point of a lot of problems.”
Buckley elaborated, saying “We have places where the storm sewers for a whole neighborhood discharge to the lake, and they rely on very little grade changes as they get there. The pipes are very flat. With these very high water levels, it’s getting to be more and more of a challenge.”
He says this reminds him of the high water that caused numerous problems in the 1980s, resulting in refortification efforts along the shoreline. Lake Michigan water levels are currently at record highs with no signs of receding anytime soon. The Two Rivers City Manager says he’s witnessed waves spraying up over the bike trail on Memorial Drive and near the newly constructed Waldo Boulevard roundabout and other points north.
More rain is in the forecast and Buckley admits he’s a bit concerned but says he’s optimistic that “everything should hold up fine.”
