Manitowoc Mayor Justin Nickels
With the start of October, road construction within the City of Manitowoc is getting closer to being finished for the season. Mayor Justin Nickels talked about the progress on Waldo Boulevard and told us that they are aiming to be reopened before November.
Work is continuing on that stretch of road today. Weather permitting, plans are to place concrete pavement in turn lanes and several south side intersections. Grading for the sidewalk is also planned along with the installation of lighting and signal installation at 11th Street.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Highway 151 resurfacing project continues as drivers should anticipate intermittent single-lane closures from Silver Street to I-43 along with short delays and backups during various flagging operations. The resurfacing occurring from Valders to the Interstate is expected to be completed sometime this month.
Looking forward, Mayor Nickels said, by this time next year; many of the main arteries within the City will be in great shape. “Every major thoroughfare…will be redone,” Nickels said. “It’s pretty nice that our main thoroughfares will be in excellent condition. “
There is one exception to that list of smooth roads in the city. Washington and Calumet is a state road, which means any work done on it has to come from the suits in Madison. “They claim it has a lot of life left in it,” Nickels told us. “I guess it’s easy to say that from a desk in Madison.”
Mayor Nickels added that most residents will be “elated” once the road construction is completed
